The church of saint Ioakem and Annie
is the boast and pride of the residents of Kaliana.
The church is in the center of the village and due to
its high belfry, it can be seen by the people who visit
the village.
It is a building of the 12th century in a Royal type
and it is a tourist attraction for many people who admire
the ancient hagiographies as well as its imposing presence.
The church has a unique design that you rarely meet
in Cyprus.
Today the church of Kaliana is dikliti
(two aisles) and with wooden roof. The north aisle concludes
in apses on the east, with three sides externally and
of shapeless semicircle form internally. The south aisle
concludes in a straight wall on the east. The aisles
are divided with three arches which are supported in
two pessaries and on the west wall and in the wall which
the apses go on. The eastern part of the south aisle
is divided with a wall from the rest of the temple and
it is a special place which contacts with the rest of
the aisle with a small short door. The church has a
main entrance in the middle of the west wall of the
north aisle and a small entrance on the west point of
the west aisle.
When you enter in the church, on the
north wall of the temple there are two big rectangular
windows which were opened in modern years .Another rectangular
window was opened in the centre of the apse. There are
two small openings on the east and west gable. On the
stilt of the roof there are painted shields of the 15th
century which are not in a good condition today.

The today form of the church is an outcome of many interventions
that were done in several times. Initially it was in
the space were the arches were while during the 16th
century a lot of changes took place which expanded the
church to the south and to west. In order for this to
be done the west wall was demolished and the south one
was replaced by three arches .this is obvious in the
south part of the roof which is the shortest one .Because
of this intervention and some others that were done
now and then, even though the church was ancient UNESCO
did not place it in its international inheritance.
Its belfry is much newer and it was
built in 1924 ě.÷.
Initially the church was fully hagiographic
but through the years and the interventions that were
conducted from time to time ,today only few hagiographies
are saved which are in a poor condition ,but they do
not seize to be interesting and cause awe to each one
of us .These hagiographies are of the 12th century .
As we enter the temple we see on the
left, on the eastern side of the west window of the
north wall, the hagiography of the Saints Forty which
is in the most tolerable condition of all the others.
On the north wall, eastern of the window there is the
picture of ‘Epapanti tou Kyriou’ (Christ’s welcoming)
and on the west the Saints Constantine and Helen.
The iconostasis shows great interest
which is newer. In the beautiful Gate on the top we
can see the Archangels and the three hierarchies together
with Saint Nicolas on the bottom. On the right side
of the beautiful Gate there is the icon of Christ and
the following: Saint John the precursor, Saint Ioakem
and Annie, Saint Marina, Saint Kyprianos, and saint
Demetrius. On the left of the beautiful Gate there is
the icon of the Virgin Mary of Kalianotissa (copy of
1897) and next to it, the icons of saint John the Theologian
and saint Paraskevi.
There is a special interest on the icon of Kalianotissa
which is double –faced with the Crucifixion on the one
side and Virgin Mary the Guide which has the name of
Kalianotissa with scenes of her life in the frame that
surrounds her. The original icon was painted in 1240
ě.÷. and there was a copy in 1897 ě.÷.
The church celebrates three times
a year .On the 9th December when there is the birthday
of the temple and the conception of Saint Annie is celebrated,
that means the event in which Saint Anna conceived Virgin
Mary.
On the 9th December the induction
of saint Ioakem and Annie is also celebrated and on
the 25th July there is the Assumption. |
