Our village spreads in the valley of the green-covered Karkotis River. The scenery here has been generously graced by nature’s most beautiful colours. The wild and domesticated vegetation merge, creating a magical scenery.

Almost the entire village is covered by a green veil thanks to the water of the Karkotis River. The streams begin their journey from the mountains of Marathasa heading to the Clarios River, creating spiral shapes and fruitful valleys.

The cultivated pieces of land are interchanged with uncultivated pieces of land, covered with wild and thick vegetation. As Giwrgos Karouzis remarks characteristically, oak trees, ladanum, latzia , sfendamia and aspalathos grow side by side with the several kinds of fruit-baring trees and vegetables, whereas the walnut and poplar trees always raise their stature higher than the rest of the vegetation.

In particular, many fruit-baring trees such as apple trees, cherry trees, pear-trees, apricot trees as well as vegetables are cultivated in the village. Among the cultivated pieces of land, a paramount place is held by the olive groves and the vineyards (see. cultivation of olive trees). However, it must be mentioned that in the past few years, viticulture has been considerably reduced in relation to the past.

The uncultivated pieces of land are covered by rich and wild vegetation such as pine-trees, platan-trees, poplar-trees, oak trees as well as latzies, trimithies and many others.

The village’s thick vegetation provides shelter for many distinctive species of the Cypriot fauna, for instance reptiles, hares and partridges. What is more, several species of migratory birds, such as swallows, visit our village.

There is no doubt that nature has dressed the village of Kaliana with its most beautiful colours, establishing it as one of the most beautiful villages of our island.
